Raising Our Hands
On Friday, November 7, 2014, more than 300 community members gathered at Portland State University’s Smith Memorial Union to participate in a broad community summit highlighting the progress, failures and opportunities ahead for the All Hands Raised Partnership’s effort to support all children from birth to career.
The morning program featured speakers Wim Wiewel, President of Portland State University, Jennie Cha, Student at Portland State University, Dani Ledezma, Education Policy Advisor to the Office of Governor John Kitzhaber, John Tapogna, President of ECONorthwest, Carole Smith, Superintendent of Portland Public Schools, and Mayor Charlie Hales of the City of Portland. Following the morning program, guests attended a City Club of Portland Friday Forum titled “Meeting Our Schools on Their Edges to Align Action.”

More than 200 guests attended the luncheon to discuss what it really looks like for a community to share responsibility, accountability and credit for helping every student succeed. Panelists Carmen Rubio (Executive Director, Latino Network), Wim Wiewel (President, Portland State University), Rob Saxton (Deputy Superintendent, Oregon Department of Education) and Dan Ryan (CEO, All Hands Raised) provided insight into this question and into the work of the All Hands Raised Partnership. Moderated by Susheela Jayapal, Founding Co-Chair of the AHR Steering Committee.
