Principal for Almost a Day

Thank you to all who joined us on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 for Principal for Almost a Day, presented by Comcast!

Many of us have not walked the halls of a school for some time, much less raised our hand in class to ask a question. Yet we are frequently asked to make decisions that impact our local schools. Founded 19 years ago, Principal for Almost a Day (PFAD) provides community leaders with an opportunity to shadow a principal to learn more about the opportunities that exist in schools throughout Multnomah County. From the “morning bell” through school lunch, PFAD participants are welcomed as honorary principals spending time gaining a first-hand experience by interacting with students, faculty, teachers and parents. PFAD is one of the ways All Hands Raised works with partners to develop a deeper understanding of how to support our students and our schools and improve collective practices that influence sustained improvements in educational outcomes for all children and youth in Multnomah County.

Thank you to the 100+ business, non-profit and civic leaders who walked alongside local school leaders, to the educators who hosted them, and to the sponsors and school districts who helped make Principal for Almost a Day possible on Tuesday, October 22! We understand what a significant commitment of time your participation requires and want to acknowledge the tremendous impact it has on our community.  As Karis Stoudamire-Phillips, longtime PFAD participant and Corporate Social Responsibility Director with Moda Health shared at lunch, “Our principals need us all to share about the good things—the many really good things—going on in our schools.”

As All Hands Raised CEO Lavert Robertson shared with you when we were together at Warner Pacific University, we hope you will continue to connect with one another beyond your Principal for Almost a Day assignment. We believe that we can only accelerate progress for our kids and families by collaborating more closely with one another.  We also believe that your words are powerful—sharing the experience you had during PFAD with your colleagues and friends keeps the good word spreading. We encourage you to keep the stories coming on social media using the #PFAD19 or by emailing them to This photo album captures some of the special moments from our shared experience.

On behalf of the entire All Hands Raised staff, thank you again for raising your hand to build stronger bridges between schools and community.

Special thanks again to all of our sponsors for their support of the event and also for providing incredible door prizes for our principals: presenting sponsor Comcast, and supporting sponsors Kaiser Permanente, Umpqua Bank, New Seasons Market, Portland Business Journal, and Warner Pacific University. And thank you to all of our local school leaders for dedicating so much time and energy to ensuring your guest(s) had a robust and rewarding morning—we are grateful.
